  • PKNIC Domain Extensions: Choose the Right .PK Category

PKNIC does not treat every Pakistan domain ending as interchangeable. A shop can use .pk or .com.pk, a non-profit can choose .org.pk, an accredited college may qualify for .edu.pk, and a federal ministry must follow the .gov.pk activation process.

Choosing the wrong category can leave you with a misleading address or a domain that PKNIC will not activate. Choosing the right one gives the name an accurate role from the beginning.

I checked PKNIC’s current domain structure, policy, education rules, government requirements and August 2026 price notice.

Its public list contains 16 categories: one direct .pk option, eight general or purpose-labelled third-level options, and seven government namespaces.

All 16 PKNIC domain extensions at a glance

The table uses PKNIC’s own category descriptions. Treat them as a selection guide, then check the detailed rules before paying.

PKNIC’s current list also names reserved spaces such as INFO.PK and NAME.PK. Do not treat a suffix from an old third-party list as a retail option unless PKNIC’s current search and policy pages confirm it.

1) Use .pk for the shortest broad Pakistan identity

A direct .pk domain name such as yourbrand.pk sits immediately before the country code. It does not add a category such as com, org or edu.

That makes .pk the cleanest choice when the name only needs to identify a business, publication, product, campaign or personal project with Pakistan. PKNIC’s policy does not require the ordinary registrant to maintain a local presence or a Pakistan-based administrative contact, so an overseas owner can also use it for a genuine Pakistan-facing project.

Direct .pk has one important construction rule: the label before .pk must contain at least four characters. abc.pk fails that rule; abcd.pk meets the length test but must still pass PKNIC’s reserved-name, collision and policy checks.

2) Choose among the six general third-level categories

PKNIC describes six third-level endings for ordinary business, organisation, family and web uses.

.com.pk covers a business or individual

.com.pk remains the broadest category after direct .pk. PKNIC labels it for a general business or individual, so incorporation alone does not decide eligibility.

Use it when the extra com helps visitors recognise a commercial address or when the direct .pk name does not fit. Compare the complete names aloud: brand.pk is shorter, while brand.com.pk carries a familiar commercial cue.

.net.pk suits a network-related business

PKNIC assigns .net.pk to network-related businesses. It fits an internet service, network integrator, connectivity company or infrastructure operation better than an unrelated restaurant or clothing shop.

The category label does not improve the network. It only describes the site’s role. Choose it when that description helps customers understand the business.

.org.pk identifies a non-profit organisation

.org.pk gives an association, charity, foundation or community organisation a purpose-led address. The ending can clarify that the site does not represent an ordinary commercial storefront.

It does not prove charitable registration, governance quality or trustworthiness. Your legal name, registration details, leadership, policies and published work must support the claim.

.fam.pk serves families and individuals

.fam.pk can support a family archive, personal history project or private community site. It says more about the owner than .web.pk, but many users will find it less familiar than .pk.

Choose it because the family context matters, not merely because a preferred name remains available.

.biz.pk supports business and promotional use

PKNIC describes .biz.pk as a general business or promotional category. It can work for a campaign, product promotion or commercial project.

Before choosing it, compare .pk and .com.pk. A shorter or more familiar ending may prove easier to say, print and remember. Availability alone should not decide the address.

.web.pk labels a general website

.web.pk provides a broad option for a web project that does not need an institutional category. It can suit a portal, directory, resource or experimental site.

Because every domain can host a website, the web label adds little organisational meaning. Use it when the complete name sounds natural and the other categories do not describe the project more accurately.

Once you have narrowed the category, use our domain search to test the complete name rather than checking the label under only one extension.

3) Separate .edu.pk from .ac.pk

The two education categories answer different eligibility questions.

.edu.pk requires an established educational institute

PKNIC reserves .edu.pk for a bona fide educational institute with sizeable active student enrolment. It also requires the registrant’s name to match the institute’s name or form an obvious abbreviation.

PKNIC keeps a new .edu.pk domain inactive until it verifies:

  • an authorisation letter signed by the principal or head on the institute’s original letterhead;

  • proof that a government education body recognises the active institute; and

  • a CNIC copy for the person who signs the authorisation.

Review the EDU.PK rules before ordering. Registering the name does not bypass activation.

.ac.pk serves broader academic providers

PKNIC launched .ac.pk on 15 May 2024 for academic and educational services beyond the accredited institutions that use .edu.pk. Its examples include tuition academies, online training, research and virtual education providers.

The registry does not require formal educational accreditation or education-department registration for .ac.pk. That makes it the appropriate education-labelled option for many tutors, course providers and training projects that cannot meet .edu.pk rules.

Do not present .ac.pk as proof of accreditation. It describes an academic purpose; it does not grant institutional status.

4) Match government domains to the jurisdiction

PKNIC reserves .gov.pk primarily for Pakistan’s federal government. It directs provincial and territorial bodies to separate namespaces:

  • .gop.pk for Punjab;

  • .gos.pk for Sindh;

  • .gob.pk for Balochistan;

  • .gkp.pk for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa;

  • .gog.pk for Gilgit-Baltistan; and

  • .gok.pk for Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

PKNIC explicitly keeps new .gov.pk domains inactive until it verifies the applicant. Its government rules require an authorisation letter signed by the organisation’s head or delegated authority on original official letterhead, plus a CNIC copy for the signer. A provincial or territorial applicant should confirm the same document route with PKNIC before ordering its jurisdictional suffix.

A high-level provincial department may use .gov.pk in limited circumstances when the body has a unique provincial role and the name prominently identifies the province. That exception needs PKNIC review; it does not turn .gov.pk into a general public-sector option.

The same naming rules affect every category

Choosing the right suffix does not guarantee that PKNIC will accept the label. Its current structure rules include these controls:

  • A label can contain up to 63 characters, while the complete domain cannot exceed 70 characters.

  • A direct second-level .pk label needs at least four characters.

  • A third-level label under .com.pk and similar categories can contain one character.

  • A label cannot start or end with a hyphen.

  • A label cannot contain two consecutive hyphens because PKNIC reserves that pattern for internationalised-domain encoding.

  • Third-level labels cannot use pk, www or a reserved category name.

  • Generic dictionary words can qualify unless another policy or reservation blocks them.

  • You do not need to preconfigure nameservers before registration.

PKNIC also blocks some direct .pk labels that could imitate its category structure and mislead visitors. For example, it applies special collision checks to four-character labels containing strings such as com, net, org or government abbreviations.

Search results only answer availability. They do not confirm trademark clearance, institutional eligibility or final policy approval.

PKNIC changed its Pakistan fee in August 2026

PKNIC’s homepage announced a PKR 300 annual increase from 1 August 2026. The current rate for a Pakistan-based registrant is PKR 2,100 per domain per year. PKNIC bills two years at a time, so the direct minimum is PKR 4,200.

The international rate remains USD 15.99 per year, which creates a two-year minimum of USD 31.98. PKNIC says the same payment schedule applies across its domain categories.

Some older PKNIC subpages still display the previous PKR 1,800 figure. The dated price update and current checkout should take priority. If you order through a reseller, compare its complete two-year registration and renewal totals rather than multiplying an old registry figure.

How to choose without misrepresenting the owner

Use this sequence:

  1. Decide whether the address should describe Pakistan only or also describe the owner type.

  2. Remove every restricted category the registrant cannot document.

  3. Compare the complete names under the remaining two or three suffixes.

  4. Check spelling, reserved-name rules and possible trademark conflicts.

  5. Confirm the two-year registration and renewal total.

  6. Keep the registrant account and contact details under the real owner’s control.

For a normal commercial business, start with .pk and .com.pk. For a non-profit, add .org.pk to the comparison. For education, decide eligibility before comparing .edu.pk and .ac.pk. Government applicants should begin with the jurisdiction, not with name availability.

PKNIC Domain Extensions FAQs

How many domain categories does PKNIC list?

PKNIC’s current domain structure page lists 16 categories: direct .pk, eight general or purpose-labelled third-level choices, and seven federal, provincial or territorial government namespaces.

Does .com.pk require a registered company?

PKNIC describes .com.pk as a category for a general business or individual. Its current public structure page does not restrict the category to incorporated companies, although every applicant must follow PKNIC policy.

What is the difference between .edu.pk and .ac.pk?

.edu.pk requires a bona fide educational institute, matching institute name and supporting documents. PKNIC makes .ac.pk available for broader academic and training services without formal accreditation documents.

Can I register a PKNIC domain for one year?

No. PKNIC bills registrations and renewals in two-year blocks, even when a provider displays an annual equivalent.

Does PKNIC include hosting or email?

No. PKNIC operates the .pk registry and root-server functions. You need a separate provider for website hosting, email and the DNS tools required to connect them.

Choose the category before the name

The suffix is part of the claim your address makes. .org.pk says non-profit, .edu.pk says qualifying educational institute, .ac.pk says academic service, and a government ending names a jurisdiction. Direct .pk and .com.pk give an ordinary business or individual the broadest routes.

Choose the truthful category first, then test names inside it. When you have a defensible shortlist, search domains with us and compare the complete two-year checkout terms before registering.
