Social media sells. But who owns the shop?

In Pakistan, many business owners ask the same question: “If my customers are already on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp, do I really need a website?”

It is a fair question. A home baker in Lahore can post a cake photo in the morning and have three orders by lunch. A clothing seller in Karachi can run an entire brand from Instagram DMs. A plumber in Islamabad gets most of his jobs through WhatsApp. None of them paid a developer, and all of them are making sales.

So is a website still worth it? The honest answer: social media is excellent for reaching customers, but a website is what turns attention into a business you own. For most businesses, the smartest approach is to use both.

Why Social Media Works So Well in Pakistan

Pakistan is a mobile-first, social-first market. According to DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report, about 117 million people in Pakistan were using the internet at the end of 2025, which is 45.6% of the population. NapoleonCat’s platform data for September 2026 puts Facebook at roughly 66 million users and Instagram at about 25.6 million.

Social platforms also remove the usual barriers to starting. They are free, instant, and familiar. You do not need technical skills, and your customers are already there. For side hustles, creators, and DM-based sellers, this is a genuine advantage, and no website replaces it.

Where Social Media Falls Short

The trouble starts when social media is your only presence.

1) You are renting, not owning.

Your followers, reach, and reputation live on someone else’s platform. Algorithms change, organic reach drops, and accounts can be restricted, hacked, or banned, sometimes with little explanation and slow appeals. If your account disappears, so does your customer list.

2) Customers can’t find you on Google.

When someone searches “bakery in Gulberg” or “AC repair in Rawalpindi,” they are often looking for a business with a proper page that shows services, prices, location, and contact details. Social profiles can appear in search, but they rarely give you the same control or ranking potential as a well-built site.

3) Credibility is harder to build.

Online shopping trust is still a real issue in Pakistan, and fake pages are common. A website with a professional design, a business email, clear policies, and customer reviews signals that you are a real, established business. This matters most when you want to win over corporate clients, wholesale buyers, or customers who spend more.

4) You answer the same questions repeatedly.

“Price?” “Where are you located?” “Are you open on Friday?” Every one of those DMs costs you time. A website answers them once, around the clock.

5) Your audience is not everyone.

Platform data suggests Facebook users in Pakistan are about 75% men, and Instagram users about 64% men. If you sell to women, families, or older customers, a social-only approach may leave many potential buyers unreached. A website and Google search reach people who never scroll your feed.

6) Ordering is manual.

DMs and screenshots work at ten orders a week. At a hundred, they become a source of errors, missed messages, and lost sales.

The Pakistan E-Commerce Opportunity

Online selling in Pakistan is still early, which is exactly why it is worth positioning yourself now. ECDB estimates Pakistan’s e-commerce revenue at about US$5.8 billion in 2025, growing 10–15% year on year, though online still accounts for only a small share of total retail. In other words, most of the growth is still ahead.

Payments are the main hurdle. Cash on delivery remains dominant: ECDB found that 93.9% of online stores it checked offered it, and the U.S.

Commercial Service describes Pakistan as still largely cash-based. But digital wallets such as JazzCash and EasyPaisa are making online payment more normal, and a website with a built-in shop lets you offer both options, so you do not lose customers who prefer to pay digitally.

Signs You’re Ready for a Website

You probably need one if:

  • Customers ask if you have a website. Someone asking is a clear sign that others expect one and quietly leave when you don’t have it.
  • You want to attract corporate or bigger clients. Companies, institutions, and wholesale buyers usually check a website before they trust a supplier.
  • You keep answering the same questions about prices, location, or opening hours.
  • You want people to find your business on Google. Your next customer may be searching right now, and a social page alone is a weak answer.
  • You’re paying for ads but sending people to your social page. A page built to explain, reassure, and convert visitors usually works harder for the same ad spend than a feed built for scrolling.

Build Your Website Before You Need One

You don’t need to leave social media, just stop depending on it alone. Use Instagram, TikTok and Facebook to get attention, and WhatsApp for quick chats and support. Make your website the home base for your prices, policies, reviews, shop and contact details, and put its link in every bio, ad and WhatsApp Business profile.

Social media is your market stall, and your website is the shop with your name on the door. The stall brings foot traffic; the shop keeps customers and earns trust.

Build your website before you need one, not after your account is restricted, a big client asks for your site, or a competitor outranks you on Google. With Truehost’s AI Website Builder, you can describe your business, get a site in minutes, connect your payment options, and start showing up in search, with no developer needed.
