The Renewal Price Trap: What to Check Before You Buy

The registration price is not always the renewal price. 

This catches buyers off guard with several popular registrars, especially global ones offering promotional first-year rates.

Before you register anywhere, check these three things:

• What is the renewal price per year? Ask the registrar directly or find it on their pricing page, not on the checkout screen.

• Is auto-renewal available? A .pk domain enters a grace period, then a redemption period with higher recovery fees, then deletion. Auto-renewal prevents all of this.

• What happens if I miss renewal? Ask how long the grace period is and what the redemption fee looks like. Some registrars charge PKR 5,000 to 15,000 to recover a domain in redemption.

Should You Register a .COM Alongside Your.PK Domain

Short answer: yes, if your brand name is available on .com and you can afford it.

Here is why Pakistani businesses do this. You register yourbusiness.com.pk as your main site. 

Someone types yourbusiness.com out of habit, because .com is what most people default to when they cannot remember a domain extension.

If you do not own yourbusiness.com, that visitor lands on a competitor or a parked page instead of your site.

This is called defensive domain registration. You are not building a second website.

You are just making sure nobody else owns the .com version of your brand name and redirecting it to your main .pk site.

• Costs: .com domains run around USD 9 to 12 per year (~PKR 2,500 to 3,400) through most registrars.
• Worth it if: Your brand has a common English name, you serve customers outside Pakistan, or you plan to expand internationally.
• Skip it if: Your brand name is highly specific to Pakistan, already taken on .com, or your budget is tight.

Already Paying Too Much? How to Transfer YourPK Domain to Truehost

If you registered your .pk domain at a higher rate elsewhere and want to move to Truehost, the transfer process is simple. 

You keep your domain name, your expiry date is preserved, and the clock does not reset.

Here is how it works:

• Request an EPP/authorisation code from your current registrar. This is a short code that authorises the transfer. Most registrars provide it within 24 hours on request.
• Make sure your domain is unlocked. Most registrars lock domains by default to prevent unauthorised transfers. Log in to your current registrar account and turn off the transfer lock.
• Go to truehost.pk domains transfer section and enter your domain name. Input the EPP code when prompted.
• Complete payment. Truehost charges the standard renewal rate for transfers. Your domain expiry date is extended by one year from the current expiry date.
• Approve the transfer email. PKNIC sends a confirmation email to the domain’s registered contact. Approve it. The transfer completes within 5 to 7 working days.

You can’t transfer a .pk domain within 60 days of registration or renewal. 

If you just renewed at your current registrar, wait out the 60-day lock period before initiating the transfer.
